Numerous BlackBerry 9930 users report that the back button on their device suddenly changes from the normal function of moving back one screen to activating the BlackBerry App Switcher. This means that backing out of menus is difficult (the red “end call” still works though not as conveniently). Turns out this appears to be a known RIM OS 7.x bug. Several fixes have been reported and I’ve only found two that work on my device (OS 7.0.0.254).
First many people have said that loading a newer version of the BB OS fixes this issue. This multi-step process takes a little longer (here’s instructions) than the two fixes I’ve seen:

a. Use the ALT key. Pushing the alt key supposedly solves this issue

b. Use the SLEEP button (very top of the BB device) – push this button twice to clear the App Switcher bug.

In my experience both of the above fixes are temporary as the bug will re-appear randomly. Until RIM is able to issue an OS fix for this the workarounds are the easiest way to clear the issue.

The BlackBerry 950 and 957 seemed to run for months on a AA battery and would receive signals from the darkest corners of your basement office. If you can live without an integrated phone (which means no SMS or MMS messaging or web browsing ) and you’re looking for an inexpensive email solution – check out this offer from Velocita Wireless (formerly Mobitex). You can obtain a free BlackBerry 950 or 957 with one year of free prepaid email messaging for only $100.

This device is older technology so I’m not certain whether it’s going to integration with your Gmail/Yahoo/Hotmail account or if you’ll have to adopt a new email address linked to the device.

While most other BlackBerry devices (including the new BlackBerry 9700) cost well over $450 to buy without a contract – the BlackBerry Bold 9000 is $299. Granted, this is hardly bargain basement pricing however for those whose AT&T BlackBerry needs replacing and are not within the period where they’re eligible for a discount on a contract renewal – it’s not a bad deal. The device will be carrier locked to AT&T so you’ll have to call them for an unlock code if you want to use it on another compatible GSM carrier (this won’t work for Sprint or Verizon who are both CDMA).

When I bought my T-Mobile BlackBerry 9700 I had one heck of a time getting the battery door off. This seemingly simple task was tough to figure out (and I didn’t notice any special instructions on how to do it). The difficulty in removing the BlackBerry 9700 cover is a change from most RIM BlackBerry doors which in the past tend to either be loose or secured by obvious latches which allow them to pop right off. There’s apparently a trick (the first time I used my fingernails to pry it). Instead you should turn the BlackBerry 9700 (Bold 2) over and use light thumb pressure in the middle of the lower 1/3 of the batter door to gently push downward. Watch the video to learn how.
