This Acer Aspire One is available on Woot! for $229. I compared this to the Amazon site and found the pricing on Woot! is about $100 – $170 cheaper (depends on color) than a comparative new model on Amazon.

This model is a refurb (90 day warranty) with Windows XP Home.

For kids it’s not a bad little deal. I’ve set my kids up to use Google Chrome or Firefox web browser to access Google Docs for spreadsheets and word processing and email. This keeps you from having to load many local applications. It’s also much easier for the kids to swap machines when they break them.

The downsides to this deal

- Atom processor – these machines are really for browsing the web and super light local application usage
- no back lit keys (as I’ve said before my biggest pet peeve)
- have to load apps through either download or USB – there’s no included DVD / CD (about $50 if you buy online)
- memory only 1GB but easy to upgrade ( about $40 )

The key on this deal is set the Netbook up to use primarily web apps – browser, Google Apps — and you’ll have a lower powered machine that’s pretty inexpensive but can still access most of the kids school stuff.

I have one that I use personally and it’s not half bad. I’ve done remote desktop sessions, etc. I wouldn’t use it was my primary machine but for quick stuff and to primarily browse the web you can’t beat it .

Granted the Woot! model is refurbished and will likely come in a generic package (as opposed to the colorful Acer box). Still for a 10.1 inch Netbook with 6 cell (8 hour life) battery and Windows XP Home this isn’t a bad deal. Remember Woot!’s a one-deal-per-day site so after midnight tonight this deal will expire.
