Amazon has the new Palm Pre Plus (Verizon) marked down to a relatively cheap $49 (requires 2 year contract) with no rebate required. This bests the official price on Verizon Wireless by $100 and is $30 cheaper than the Sprint version (less memory). The Palm Pre Plus has had generally good reviews though has been hampered by an initial lack of third party applications when it was first introduced on Sprint last year. The device has also been criticized for seeming sluggish although a recent 1.4 OS upgrade appears to have diminished speed complaints somewhat. The strength of the Palm Pre Plus is that it easily synchronizes your contacts, calendar and emails from a variety of sources (Google being one of the most popular) along with the social contacts from Facebook. The biggest downside to the phone is that Palm recently issued a warning that the devices aren’t selling nearly as well as they projected causing many to question how long Palm can survive as an independent entity.

Swype has once again opened up their beta program for Android owners seeking to test the keyboard replacement. Instead of relying on awkward keypresses, Swype allows the user to form letters by dragging a finger from letter to letter.

The interesting part of Swype is that you don’t have to touch each key precisely. Just getting close to the key is enough to register the letter. An on-board dictionary is excellent at accurately guessing the word you are trying to type. Register online now and the company will instantly send you a link to download the Swype beta.

Update: March 6, 2010 – The Swype Beta stopped working for me on my Google Nexus One phone. It also presents a warning about it being configured for another phone. There’s also no voice input (as is available on the 2.1 devices).

Apple has just made an announcement that starting March 12, 2010 you can pre-order the Apple iPad Wi-Fi model. Orders for the 3G cellular enabled version will begin later in April. The magical “go live” pickup date is April 3 when you can stand in line with a few hundred other Apple fans to get your new iPad. Both models will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the U.K. by late April. The iPad, which features a touch screen similar to the iPhone, will cost between $499 and $829. Apple says it will include 12 new applications designed especially for the device.

CUPERTINO, Calif., March 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Apple® today announced that its magical and revolutionary iPad will be available in the US on Saturday, April 3, for Wi-Fi models and in late April for Wi-Fi + 3G models. In addition, all models of iPad will be available in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK in late April.

Beginning a week from today, on March 12, US customers can pre-order both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models from Apple’s online store (www.apple.com) or reserve a Wi-Fi model to pick up on Saturday, April 3, at an Apple retail store.

“iPad is something completely new,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’re excited for customers to get their hands on this magical and revolutionary product and connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”
Starting at just $499, iPad lets users browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more. iPad is just 0.5 inches thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds—thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook—and delivers battery life of up to 10 hours.*

iPad’s revolutionary Multi-Touch™ interface makes surfing the web an entirely new experience, dramatically more interactive and intimate than on a computer. You can read and send email on iPad’s large screen and almost full-size “soft” keyboard or import photos from a Mac®, PC or digital camera, see them organized as albums, and enjoy and share them using iPad’s elegant slideshows. iPad makes it easy to watch movies, TV shows and YouTube, all in HD, or flip through the pages of an ebook you downloaded from Apple’s new iBookstore while listening to your music collection.

The App Store on iPad lets you wirelessly browse, buy and download new apps from the world’s largest app store. iPad includes 12 new innovative apps designed especially for iPad and will run almost all of the more than 150,000 apps on the App Store, including apps already purchased for your iPhone® or iPod touch®. Developers are already creating exciting new apps designed for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch interface, large screen and high-quality graphics.

The new iBooks app for iPad includes Apple’s new iBookstore, the best way to browse, buy and read books on a mobile product. The iBookstore will feature books from the New York Times Best Seller list from both major and independent publishers, including Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, Macmillan Publishers, Penguin Group and Simon & Schuster.

The iTunes® Store gives iPad users access to the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store with a catalog of over 12 million songs, over 55,000 TV episodes and over 8,500 films including over 2,500 in stunning high definition. All the apps and content you download on iPad from the App Store, iTunes Store and iBookstore will be automatically synced to your iTunes library the next time you connect with your computer.

Pricing & Availability

iPad will be available in Wi-Fi models on April 3 in the US for a suggested retail price of $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, $699 for 64GB. The Wi-Fi + 3G models will be available in late April for a suggested retail price of $629 for 16GB, $729 for 32GB and $829 for 64GB. iPad will be sold in the US through the Apple Store® (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers.

iPad will be available in both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + 3G models in late April in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. International pricing will be announced in April. iPad will ship in additional countries later this year.
The iBooks app for iPad including Apple’s iBookstore will be available as a free download from the App Store in the US on April 3, with additional countries added later this year.

This morning (actually Wednesday evening – but I just noticed it this morning) Google Wave went live with a new feature that allows for notification of new activity in waves you are participating in. The feature is activated via your inbox and will send an email based on a timeline (immediate, hourly, daily, never) that you decide. More screenshots follow. Here’s where the main notification is set in Google Wave.

Once you’ve enabled the notification Google Wave is smart enough not to send a notification for every single reply. You’ll only get one notification until you go back into the Wave and then the notification for that particular Wave will be reset so that you’ll receive replies.

Here’s what the Gmail inbox notification looks like for a Wave that I’m participating in.

Here are the rules for notifications as per the Google Wave blog:

When you’re added to a new wave, or a wave that you are on changes, we’ll send you an email with a short summary of the text and links to go straight to your updated waves. Rest assured, we know waves can change a lot, so we will only send you one notification about a changed wave until you have logged in to look at it (i.e.: if a wave changes 10 times after we send the first notification, we won’t send 10 more emails). Waves you have open also won’t trigger updates.

If you look quickly it’s very tough to tell who exactly is offering the Nexus One for sale. Most phones on Amazon are sold through a partnership with Wirefly. Still other phones, typically unlocked devices such as the Nexus One are sold by third party sellers.

However if you look at little closer at Amazon page which displays the Nexus One there are a couple extra features that make me wonder if Amazon is about to start selling the Nexus One themselves.

While the presence of an extended description — which states “Amazon.com Product Description” doesn’t by itself mean that Amazon will soon (or ever) start selling the Google Nexus One – however I find it odd that I can’t find any other third party sold phones labeled with an Amazon Product description or with as extensive a description.

Wirefly is presently offering Bing Cash Back of $100 for all phone purchases. Unlike most other phone offers this cash back applies to contract, upgrade and no-contract purchases. Up to 5 family lines can be upgraded – and each line will be eligible for $100 cash back from Bing. To get in on the deal you MUST access the Wirefly site through the cash back link that appears at the top of the Bing search page. This offer makes many of the popular phone purchases – including the Droid for $49 – work out so that you now receive money for purchasing the phone. If you need to purchase a replacement no-contract phone you’ll also qualify for the $100 Bing Cash Back.

Remember that to qualify you must enter the Wirefly site through the Bing link. Once in the site you’ll see deals such as this new Palm Pre for Verizon at $599 less $100 for a net no-contract price of $499.
