This morning (actually Wednesday evening – but I just noticed it this morning) Google Wave went live with a new feature that allows for notification of new activity in waves you are participating in. The feature is activated via your inbox and will send an email based on a timeline (immediate, hourly, daily, never) that you decide. More screenshots follow. Here’s where the main notification is set in Google Wave.

Once you’ve enabled the notification Google Wave is smart enough not to send a notification for every single reply. You’ll only get one notification until you go back into the Wave and then the notification for that particular Wave will be reset so that you’ll receive replies.

Here’s what the Gmail inbox notification looks like for a Wave that I’m participating in.

Here are the rules for notifications as per the Google Wave blog:

When you’re added to a new wave, or a wave that you are on changes, we’ll send you an email with a short summary of the text and links to go straight to your updated waves. Rest assured, we know waves can change a lot, so we will only send you one notification about a changed wave until you have logged in to look at it (i.e.: if a wave changes 10 times after we send the first notification, we won’t send 10 more emails). Waves you have open also won’t trigger updates.

My (former) favorite service that I’d recommended was pingie.com which allowed you to enter in an RSS feed and would send a real time notification every time a web site added a new post. I first wrote about Pingie back in 2008 at Geardiary. Since then I used this to track some of the bigger sites like Techmeme.com to provide immediate alert via email when new stories were being written across many blogs. Unfortunately it appears that Pingie has met its demise – at least for now. Notices posted in November 2009 on the site indicate that due to database troubles (aka – no backup?) the site was forced to shutdown and “all user data has been purged”.

Yesterday I received this email from a friend wondering what my thoughts were about ditching MS Exchange and going with Google Apps full time for email, documents, calendars, etc.

I’ve been a Google Apps for Domains user for about two years. Prior to that I’d used Microsoft Exchange via an outsourced provider. Google Apps hosts my company’s email and calendars (cost is $50/year per user for 25 GB).

Below is my reply to the inquiry about what my experiences with Google have been:

Hi Wayne,

We have 5 people that need to share information, and we currently have our own Exchange server.

We are in the process of evaluating whether that is the most practical solution for you email, calendaring, etc.

What has been the result of your experience with going Google?

My Experiences With Google Apps For Domains

I’ve been extremely pleased with Google Apps for Domains (they service my s-consult.com email as well as contacts, calendar and Google Docs). The downtime has been minimal and I integrate my iPhone (GoogleSync) and Motorola Droid (native) to receive near real time email. If you have a BlackBerry it will also connect and deliver real time mail.

Before Google I used an outsourced MS Exchange host (I think it was http://www.exchangemymail.com) to keep all my email. That worked well but there were limits on the amount of mail I could keep and the idea of having a few hundred megabytes of email on my local hard drive to slow things down just wasn’t appealing after a while. In fact one of the main reasons I left Exchange and went to Google was that I wanted Google to worry about servicing and storing all my email on their servers. I do not download any email from Google – it’s all stored remotely on their server.

Google also allows for you to retain nearly all of your email. Their storage limits are very generous and instead of deleting email you archive it to a separate folder called “All”.

Cost is $50 per year and they provide 25 GB of storage (of which after two or three years I’m using about 5GB and that is with retaining all my email in an archive format).

About the only very minor issue that have noticed is some clients will block web access Gmail so when you are on site you can’t check your email from their offices. Naturally you shouldn’t be checking email on client time but if you are out on a project for several days then you may have to do some of that on their network.

Uptime is as good or better than trying to host email yourself. There are minor outages here or there but nothing more than a few hours that I can remember.

Overall I recommend it highly.
