In the last few days I’ve noticed a regular spam problem from Facebook.

My notifications bar shows links from people I don’t know and am not friends with. They are inviting me to like a spam page – in this case “iPhone 5 testing” which leads to a multitude of pop-up windows and eventually pulls me off-site to another spam page which I’ve not bothered to click onto any further for fear of contracting malware-itis.

The issue with Facebook is:

• Non-Friends  should not be able to randomly send you notifications – if there’s an easy way to shut this off I’ve not found it
• On the incoming notifications there should be a way to flag a USER as sending SPAM – the current default action if you try to click on the user icon is to actually send you to the spam the user sent

In order to block/report the user you must know to click “See All Notifications” and from there you can click the users link and block/report them.

Just spotted these Facebook Like and Dislike rubber stamps over on Amazon. The stampers cost about $15 shipped and are self-inking and there are a set of two which indicate your agreement or disagreement with whatever you’re rubber stamping. Not a bad way to integrate social media into your office.

Update 3-9-2011: Turns out the issue was on my iMac — PeerGuardian software appeared to be blocking the port required (5222) for HipChat to connect. I’ve no idea why other services have worked fine on my iMac and so far only HipChat seems to have been an issue. Turning off Peer Guardian resolved the issue.

HipChat looks to be a Campfire type group chat solution with a few extra features — hopefully the main one being that it doesn’t constantly announce that you enter or exit the chat.

Sadly I’ll never know how well it works as the desktop (Adobe Air – sigh) client refuses to login. I’ve never experienced firewall issues of this type before. I take it as an omen to uninstall and remove my test account.

Yes HipChat has suggestions on how to work around this. Can you imagine in your wildest dreams signing up for a paid chat service — and then having to serve as the support desk for a bunch of users (most of who you probably had to convince to use the service in the first place?).

No, really. Picture yourself walking these unsophisticated users through Telnet and then opening up ports on their firewall…

Thank goodness for 30 day trials. If there’s one thing I’m starting to learn — always give technology a full evaluation period before deciding on purchasing.

It’s been about 6 months since my Sage centered 90 Minds Consulting Group ditched Yahoo Groups and moved entirely to Socialcast for member information sharing.Socialcast is an online messaging system similar to Yammer.  Our 90 Minds group is over 27 members strong and while each firm is typically under half a dozen people in size we combine resources online to answer questions about Sage ERP MAS90, MAS200, Accpac, SageCRM and other technical issues that members are experiencing. By combining the resources of well over 415 employees in 17 different states – our 90 Minds group is able to compete effectively with organizations many times our size.

Instead of exchanging 30 to 50 messages a day (some of which veer off topic and clog email inboxes) we now use the Socialcast network to post an reply to messages online. Until now one of the weakensses with Socialcast had been their notification system which failed to notify you when posts that you were participating in had new responses. That’s all changed now and Socialcast have just updated their system with the following :

As you interact with other users, notifications about activity relevant to you, such as group invitations and new followers, will appear on the Notifications page.

An indicator will also appear in real-time above your stream to call your attention to new notifications as they arrive.

Active participation in LinkedIn discussion groups is one of the most useful – and overlooked – aspect of LinkedIn. Most users don’t realize that a great majority of the users registered in a particular discussion group also receive daily (or weekly) summaries of every active message (both new and replies). And the last person to reply is often listed on the email that goes out as “From xxxxxx and other members of “. Actively participating in online discussions in the business oriented LinkedIn group is a great way to gain recognition with peers and prospects. Now LinkedIn have turned on the ability to participate in discussions without having to visit the actual LinkedIn site. Some discussion groups (such as the Sage Employees, Consultants and Alumni group) now have the ability to reply to discussions via email.

As you may have already heard Facebook announced today that they’re re-inventing messaging. They stopped short of calling their revised messaging an “email killer” – however many are predicting that’s exactly what it ultimately could become.

The new email sounds a lot like Google’s Gmail – right down to the ability to separate out the most important emails (Google calls this priority inbox — Facebook calls it your social inbox). To accomodate this new system users will have the choice of selecting a new @facebook.com email address or they can retain their same address – according to Facebook their new messaging system will work under either method.

What’s interesting is Facebook has also taken a page from Google’s “closed” testing of new features. If you want a Facebook email address you’ll need to wait for them to invite you. Starting on Sunday you’ll be able to feed your Facebook crops by using credits that you purchase in a Target store. This is similar in concept to how you can purchase iTunes cards at most retail outlets. The cards can initially be used on more than 150 social games and applications, including Zynga (FarmVille, FrontierVille), CrowdStar (Happy Aquarium, HelloCity) and PopCap Games (Bejeweled Blitz). Facebook gift cards do not replace Zynga’s existing game cards.

According to a story in today’s USA Today the cards will be available in values of $15, $25 and $50 at all of Target’s 1,750 retail stores and at Target.com. Two or three more national retailers will start selling the cards in coming months. This will be a great solution for those who prefer not to give their credit information to Facebook or parents looking to gift credits to their kids.

In a blog post today Google pulled the plug on their “never quite caught on” web based collaboration tool named Google Wave. Originally introduced in May 2009 as the hoped for successor to email – it touted features such as real time collaboration and multiple revision of documents.  Wave gradually succumbed to what appeared to be lack of interest by Google.

At a time when everyone worldwide was moving to the mobile web, Google Wave sorely missed a way to access data while mobile. All viewing and entry had to be done on a desktop computer.  In addition for a product that touted collaboration the use of groups was embarrassingly simplistic. Google Wave never supported the creation of groups of any kind. Rather it required you to setup a second group structure on another service called Google Groups and invite people who you wanted to include in a group on Wave to join the Google Group.

Confused yet? Apparently so was everyone else. Google Wave just never caught on. Development seemed to slow to a snail’s pace.

Today Google announced that enough was enough and Wave would be defunct at the end of 2010 as a public product.

We have received several confirmed reports from fanpage administrators that the photo uploader on standard fanpage Notes tab has been inoperable since mid-afternoon yesterday. If you try to upload a picture to a Facebook Fan Page Note – you’ll receive the “wait” icon then your upload will disappear and there’s not ability to re-try.

The problem is a known one – with the workaround appearing to be that you need to upload your image to a personal Facebook photo album first and then use that image in the note. No ETA from Facebook on when they might fix this.
