Garmin Nuvifone G60 at $199 Without Contract Now Cheaper Than Most Regular GPS

Amazon has the Garmin Nuvifone G60 listed as only $199 WITHOUT contract. The price is cheaper most other single purpose GPS devices that Amazon sells – and the Nuvifone includes a cell phone. This is quite possibly the last gasp for this model with the inclusion of free Google Maps turn-by-turn directions on far superior Android phones driving a stake though single purpose smartphones such as this. The device launched in October 2009 for an eye popping $300 on contract and was widely panned as too expensive for a GPS/phone. The price soon sank as third party retailers such as Amazon picked it up. The on-contract price is now FREE at Amazon (you’ll pay $99 after $100 MIR at ATT Wireless). For $199 without contract this might make a great Mother’s Day present.

My local Walmart (Rocky Hill, CT) was displaying this promotion tonight. It promises a statement credit of $50 for switching from a competing carrier. This appears to be above and beyond any of the existing discounts for the phone which Walmart includes in the price of their phone (no rebate required). The expiration date had originally been November 30 and there was a handwritten note that the new expiration was December 31, 2009.

Walmart has this prepaid Virgin Mobile Slash slider phone on promotion for $19 (compare to Amazon $79). Certainly this is no high-end feature phone but with VGA camera (4x zoom) for still photos; Bluetooth for handsfree communication; speakerphone it certainly can do a good job faking it. The price is unbeatable for someone looking for a feature rich phone to use on Virgin Mobile (whose provider in USA is Sprint). If you have kids just starting to ask for cell phones of their own – prepaid is the only way to go.

With Virgin Mobile, you can pay only for the calling time you use. You can choose a plan that’s based just on minutes (with rates between 5¢ and 10¢ per minute, depending on the amount of minutes you buy). Or, you can choose a monthly plan with no annual contract, including Total Unlimited Calling for $79.99. Pay-as-you-go users can easily Top-Up your Virgin Mobile account right from your phone. First, buy a Top-Up card at one of the thousands of retailers that carry them; or register your debit card, credit card, or PayPal account at the Virgin Mobile USA web site in order to add minutes to your account directly from your phone.

Additionally, you can choose from a variety of mobile messaging plans, which includes text and picture messaging, email, and IM (via AOL and Yahoo!). Virgin Mobile USA’s national coverage is powered by the nationwide Sprint PCS network.

How To Activate A Prepaid Phone On A Post Paid Verizon Plan

There’s nothing worse than watching your Verizon phone slide off into the water – until you realize that water damage isn’t covered by your Verizon insurance and you’re going to be paying a full un-subsidized price for a replacement. With GSM carriers like AT&T or T-Mobile replacing a phone is as easy as swapping out the SIM card contained in the old phone. Unfortunately Verizon doesn’t use any such SIM so you have to follow this trick to replace your damaged phone without going to Verizon and buying an absurdly priced replacement. This works by obtaining a prepaid phone (typically on sale weekly at many stores such as Walmart or Target).

The first step in swapping a phone onto your Verizon account is to find a cheap phone. Either eBay or one of the deal sites will work for uncovering phones for sale without contract.

Purchasing a prepaid phone (sold as InPulse) that works with Verizon. These are readily available at nearly any discount store. The phones go on sale frequently – search Fatwallet and Slickdeals for the latest available deals.

After you’ve obtained your replacement phone – log into your Verizon account.

Next find the link on the right said that reads “Activate my phone”. Use the activate phone screen to enter in the new ESN/MEID data (instructions will be shown on how to find this – typically the numbers are listed on the box).

When you turn the new phone on, it will have a prompt on the screen to program your phone by pressing send.

DO NOT PRESS SEND! PRESS END.

Then, dial *228 and:

if you have activated it online choose No.1
If you are doing it on the phone choose No.3

According to several people who’ve done this the official Verizon policy is you must own the prepaid phone six months before it can be swapped onto a regular Verizon account. However many people have spoken up to say they’ve gone into Walmart or Target, purchased a prepaid phone, gone out to their car and been able to swap it immediately onto their Verizon account.

These two secrets let you turn the tables on the carriers and they both involve using a prepaid phone to do it. First, buy this T-Mobile T349 is on sale for $49 at Best Buy sans contract (normal price is $89). That’s not the secret though. What most people don’t realize is you can use this prepaid phone on a regular T-Mobile account (aka post paid) to replace a broken phone – as well as on prepaid.

The two tricks:

Buy this no contract phone to replace a broken T-Mobile phone as opposed to renewing a contract (AT&T prepaid phones also make good low cost replacements phones and both work on either prepaid or post-paid accounts)
Buy this phone for a parent or relative that rarely uses a cell but wants one for security. If you purchase $100 worth of minutes (aka T-Mobile Gold Rewards) they won’t expire for a full year. That’s a little over $8 per month for cell phone service.

You knew it was only a matter of time. Once Verizon’s version of the HTC Hero ( Droid Eris ) hit the stores for $99 Sprint would be forced to lower the pricing on their own HTC Hero.
