For a short while I used the Taskforce App for Gmail. I was relatively happy with it until I tried synchronizing to Google Tasks and it kept disconnecting. Rather than spend an endless game of debugging an application that might never work properly (the developers last blog post was August 2011), I decided to cancel the auto renewal.

Auto renewal is in my opinion one of those tricky sales gimmicks employed by companies that hope you’ll forget the day after your auto-renewal goes into place. Then even though they miraculously could charge your credit card in milliseconds to get your signup – they have extreme difficulty reversing that charge.

Rather than take a chance that I would forget to cancel a service that I no longer felt was worth the money I decided to cancel online (which thankfully Taskforce allows).

However they immediately cancel your account in full and back you down to a free account — despite my having paid in advance for a full year.

In my opinion extremely poor business.

Hello Styx fans. No sure if you’ve noticed this but on September 2, 2011 the free Mohegan Sun Casino Wolf Den  (Uncasville CT) will host Dennis Deyoung  for a 1 hour concert in their center court lounge.

Seating here is first come first serve. If you don’t get into the main lounge you can watch the show from the Mohegan Sun casino floor perimeter.

True Styx fans of course know that Dennis Deyoung was the lead singer for Styx. This makes the show almost as good as a Styx concert. According to the Wolf Den web site:

Just last week our Condo Association took delivery of well over two dozen fat phone directories. These paper based spam books sat unclaimed underneath each of our mailboxes for about a week before someone threw them all into the recycling bin.

This morning a deal for Olark, an online chat support window for web sites, arrived in my email. The deal promised a year of Gold service for $125 verus the normal $44 per month. All that you need to do is pay on the website in one lump sum via Paypal. Or do you?

After logging in via PayPal and making payment I was shocked to find that before I could claim the “deal” I also was required to provide a credit card number to Olark. Nowhere in the offer did it make any mention of having to keep a credit card number on file with Olark or I likely wouldn’t have bought this deal.

Use extreme caution if you are unwilling to sign up for a recurring billing arrangement (after the 12 month period Olark will bill you $44 per month unless you’ve cancelled). Full image of the deal after the break.

Can anyone spot where AppSumo has indicated that after you pay them $125 that you’re required to also enter in a credit card number with Olark?

If it’s there I’ve completely overlooked it.
In my opinion this is just downright misleading.

According to a post on Yelp – which is backed up by our own observation of an empty parking lot – Custy’s International Buffet appears to be closed. Custy’s was just down the road from the Foxwoods Casino and about 5 miles off Route 95 in Stonington. The restaurant was unique in that it operated as a buffet where for $79.95 you could eat as much seafood – including lobster and shrimp as you liked.  Steak was also served and the buffet was remarkably fresh and good.
Interior seating was best described as rustic. The last few times we’d visited the traffic seemed a little slow. According to the Yelp post Custy’s closed sometime around February 2011.  We’d tried to visit the restaurant in July 2010 on the fourth but found it closed. This was our first clue that perhaps changes were in store.

According to an email receive this morning Amazon is now terminating all Connecticut members of the Amazon Associates Program. Apparently this change is a direct result of Connecticut’s attempt to jump on the revenue wagon and start taxing Internet retailers with affiliate programs paying residents of their state. For well over a decade, the Amazon Associates Program has worked with thousands of Connecticut residents. Unfortunately, the budget signed by Governor Malloy contains a sales tax provision that compels us to terminate this program for Connecticut-based participants effective immediately. It specifically imposes the collection of taxes from consumers on sales by online retailers – including but not limited to those referred by Connecticut-based affiliates like you – even if those retailers have no physical presence in the state.

We opposed this new tax law because it is unconstitutional and counterproductive. It was supported by big-box retailers, most of which are based outside Connecticut, that seek to harm the affiliate advertising programs of their competitors. Similar legislation in other states has led to job and income losses, and little, if any, new tax revenue. We deeply regret that we must take this action.

As a result of the new law, contracts with all Connecticut residents participating in the Amazon Associates Program will be terminated today, June 10, 2011. Those Connecticut residents will no longer receive advertising fees for sales referred to Amazon.com [ http://www.amazon.com/ ], Endless.com [ http://www.endless.com/ ], MYHABIT.COM [ http://www.myhabit.com/ ] or SmallParts.com [ http://www.smallparts.com/ ]. Please be assured that all qualifying advertising fees earned on or before today, June 10, 2011, will be processed and paid in full in accordance with the regular payment schedule.
