If you have teenagers who are heavy text messaging users you should know that since May 2010 T-Mobile has been offering an unlimited text and picture (SMS and MMS) messaging plan for only $15 per month. There are no other fees and voice minutes are charged at .10 per minute. Some users on Howardforum have reported that short messaging to Twitter and Facebook are not included though it appears messages sent via MMS to the respective email address for Facebook work just fine without additional charge.

This is not a terrible deal for providing a phone to someone who rarely calls but sends lots of text messages. The .10 per minute for voice is an attractive rate and carries no per day fee. As better phones arrive we are starting to see prepaid emerge as a much better alternative for those looking to avoid monthly contracts. For someone who has more voice calling there’s also a $50 monthly plan that provides unlimited voice and text.

If you’re upset by Verizon Wireless’s pricing change that requires new subscribers (or upgrades) with a half decent phone to enroll in a data plan – here’s a great workaround that removes lengthy contracts and lowers your bill. For only $39.95 / month join PagePlus Prepaid cellular and receive unlimited voice and text messaging and 20 megs of monthly data. Their service uses the same Verizon Wireless signal as you’re accustomed to – without the Verizon monthly bill that nickels and dimes you for texting and data . But that’s not where the greatness ends. PagePlus allows you to bring your own phone. That means you can buy an LG ENV3 for about $200 on eBay and bring it to PagePlus for a flat $39.95 monthly fee (unlimited voice and text). Compare that to Verizon proper where a comparable unlimited voice plan goes for $69 before they nail you for a (now mandatory for LG ENV3 and many other similar phones) $9.99, 25 megabyte per month data plan for data services or a $29.99 unlimited data plan. Plus on Verizon Wireless texting plans are still priced separately and run an added $20 monthly JUST for texting.

Clearly these plans are for those who don’t need data as PagePlus plans only include voice and text ( data is a pricey $1.20/mb).You’ll need to replenish your minutes every 120 days or lose them. For anyone who uses a lot of voice and text messages each month – I haven’t found a plan that beats the PagePlus $39 offering.
