The Google web page is now redirecting those asking ‘when the hell is the Google Nexus One going to be available for Verizon?’ to the Verizon Droid Incredible which is scheduled to launch April 29.

I still haven’t read any official announcement on this — however the Google Phone web page has been updated so that a Verizon version of the Nexus One is not longer showing as “coming soon” and instead the Google site redirects users to sign up for the Droid Incredible. Whether users will be able to buy the Droid Incredible without a contract direct from Google on launch day (4/29) remains to be seen. The reported no contract price of the Droid Incredible is $529 which brings it in line with the pricing on other no contract Nexus One models that Google has offered.

Update: Hard to say for sure but based on this release it appears that Google is out of the phone biz

For now the Nexus One phones listed on Amazon are all from third party sellers. And apparently the phones, priced around $700, are primarily aimed at people who don’t realize the direct from Google price is $529. If you look quickly it’s very tough to tell who exactly is offering the Nexus One for sale. Most phones on Amazon are sold through a partnership with Wirefly. Still other phones, typically unlocked devices such as the Nexus One are sold by third party sellers.

However if you look at little closer at Amazon page which displays the Nexus One there are a couple extra features that make me wonder if Amazon is about to start selling the Nexus One themselves.

While the presence of an extended description — which states “Amazon.com Product Description” doesn’t by itself mean that Amazon will soon (or ever) start selling the Google Nexus One – however I find it odd that I can’t find any other third party sold phones labeled with an Amazon Product description or with as extensive a description.

However I took a trip into New York City over the weekend. I stayed on the 20th floor of the Grand Hyatt hotel. During the time that we were in the room the signal fluctuated G (GPRS) to E (EDGE) to 3G (Fastest). Here’s a quick video demonstration of the type of speeds that I was encountering. Worth noting that my iPhone 3GS and Verizon Droid both consistently clocked well into the 1mb+ speed ranges from the same location.

It’s been barely a week since the Google Nexus One was released and already the Android fans at Android and Me have figured out how to open it up by rooting it (Warning: Probably voids your warranty and is not a process for the novice). Once you apply their procedures you’ll be able to run all manners of nifty applications – with tethered access via Wi-Fi being one of the coolest. Their site claims you could do this in 10 minutes if you’re skilled but 30 minutes is more like it.

Are you thinking of buying an unlocked (unsubsidized) Google Nexus one for $529 but aren’t sure you want to spend $59 per month for the 500 minute/data plan? According to participants on the Google Nexus One support forum there’s a $39 data only plan that they’ve been able to secure which when combined with VOIP applications like sipdroid. provides for a way (albeit less convenient) to get unlimited voice and data. Worth noting that for only $10 more than the $39 data only plan you can snag a 500 minute plan plus unlimited data. Simply sign up for the 500 minute Even More Plus plan for $59 which includes unlimited texting (and only works if you’re bringing your own phone to T-Mobile and not purchasing a subsidized model). If you call T-Mobile they’ll remove the monthly $10 texting charge providing you with a $49 monthly 500 voice minute plan that includes unlimited data — without any contract.

User Apogee on the Nexusoneforum has kindly shared one way to forced your Nexus One onto 3G data speeds. Some users have reported that their phone won’t lock onto 3G and instead switches back to EDGE. Seems there’s a programming menu that will allow you to specify 3G speeds only. Now, I have no idea if this means you’re phone gets no data connection if you live in an EDGE only area so experiment with this at your own risk — and let us know how it turns out.

It appears the programming mode for Nexus One is entered via the phone – type in *#*#4636#*#* and press the call button.

Warning: I have not verified that this works as my house is squarely in a 3G coverage area. Proceed at your own risk and realize that changes to the programming menu are not generally for the faint of heard and can be harmful to your phone. You brick it and you own it.

Update: As reported on the Nexusoneforum.net if you swap your settings to 3G only and then move out of a 3G area to one that has only EDGE you will NOT get any data coverage.

You’ve just bought a Google Nexus One. The anticipation builds as you take it out of the box and turn it on. Then nothing happens when you try to turn it on. While we have not heard of any “dead on arrival” devices there’s a natural question of how to get a Google Nexus One fixed when you’ve ordered it online direct from Google.

You cannot walk into any of the phone carrier stores to get the superphone repaired as the carrier’s only support the plans and NOT the phone (because they didn’t sell you the phone). Under this new model of phone sales your options are to use the Google Nexus One troubleshooting page or to contact HTC at 1-888-216-4736 seven days a week from 6am to 1am EST. If you’ve had to call this phone line or send in a Google Nexus One for repairs be sure you leave some feedback in the comments as to what your experiences are. This is one of the first major phone launches where the cell phone carriers will not be acting as a repair/warranty source for a phone on their network and it will be interesting to observe how gracefully repairs are handled.
