Sprint QChat Discontinued
Sprint Nextel has announced that they will no longer sell phones based on Qualcomm’s QChat technology. Instead the carrier will re-focus efforts on the iDEN network which it acquired in a $35 billion deal when it purchased Nextel in 02005. QChat was first launced in 2008 and represented an EVDO Rev A means to carry push-to-talk communications. It was believed to be the replacement for the aged Nextel iDEN network. However in the past year Sprint has either reinvigorated their iDEN network or the demand for walkie talkie phones by non-construction types is so slack as to reduce the need to maintain a separate network for them. Sprint will continue to support QChat for the forseeable future but won’t sell any new model phones based on the technology.
