Droid Camera Autofocus Healed – For The Next 24.5 Days?
It appears that Motorola Droid owners woke up to an unexpected surprise today. The camera on the Droid had been universally panned for it’s inability to lock on and give a “green” focus signal in the viewfinder. Most Droid owners found that when they tried to snap an image that it would focus only occasionally. At first the most plausible explanation seemed to be that Motorola pushed some type of OTA (over the air) update quietly to users. Then a commenter at Engadget had this theory which sounds most plausible:
There’s a rounding-error bug in the camera driver’s autofocus routine (which uses a timestamp) that causes autofocus to behave poorly on a 24.5-day cycle. That is, it’ll work for 24.5 days, then have poor performance for 24.5 days, then work again.
The 17th is the start of a new “works correctly” cycle, so the devices will be fine for a while. A permanent fix is in the works.
Sure enough in testing my Droid I’m not having any trouble focusing the camera. Now can we please quiet down the noisy start-up shutter sound?
