Lost Australian girls use Facebook not their phone to summon emergency help

facebook distress messageFile this one under “Don’t try this at home”. Two Australian girls,  aged 10 and 12, became lost in a storm drain. Instead of summoning help via the traditional call to the local police or fire department the girls posted a Facebook status message requesting aid.

Lucky for them a friend was reviewing Facebook at just the right moment. He noticed their status update for assistance and notified the local authorities who promptly rescued the girls and presumably gave them a stern lecture to call the police emergency number (000 over in Australia) instead of Facebook the next time they’re in trouble.
